Shooting in Motion

Hello! This is a different post. There is no photos to show. This post is a retrospective one about 2017 and the impact of this blog on my life.

Like I said, in Shot no.1, this blog was created to show my photos and to talk about the places I visited. It is kind of a mix between a travel guide and a photographic portfolio.

The "Watching Through Lens" is having a huge impact on my life. It made me learn a lot more about photography (however I'm still at a very amateur level), it made me go out and explore the world outside, it made me spend a lot of money in photography equipment, it allowed me to learn how to enjoy other peoples photos and the best thing is that someone showed interest in my pictures and made this video.

Coinaphoto is a community of photographers where you can upload photos and earn money with that! They are very friendly and approachable people. One day, a girl called Lilia Bara emailed me asking if I would like to feature in a video where they show people that love photography. I was one of the lucky ones. I bought a gimbal to have some smooth clips recorded with my GoPro. I filmed in several places around Dublin city centre and in Killiney Hill, recorded the audio and sent over to Lilia and she did the editing. I think the final result is pretty good!

Since that video was recorded my love for photography grew even more, my friends from work offered me one of my photos printed and framed and the quality impressed me a lot and that is something that I might start doing in the future. Also, I invested more money in more equipment including a new camera, the Canon 77D which is making me very happy!

Now for 2018, I'm planning new places to photograph and hope new projects come up but until all that happens I'll just be happy if you watch, comment and share my photos!

Olá! Esta é uma publicação diferente. Não há fotos para mostrar. Esta publicação é uma retrospectiva sobre 2017 e o impacto desse blog na minha vida.

Como eu disse, no Shot no.1, este blog foi criado para mostrar minhas fotos e falar sobre os lugares que visitei. É uma mistura entre um guia de viagem e um portfólio fotográfico.

O "Wathcing Through Lens" está tendo um enorme impacto na minha vida. Fez-me aprender muito mais sobre fotografia (no entanto, ainda estou em um nível muito amador), fez-me sair e explorar o mundo lá fora, fez-me gastar muito dinheiro em equipamento de fotográfico, permitiu-me aprender como desfrutar das fotos de outras pessoas e a melhor coisa foi que houvesse quem mostrasse interesse no meu portfólio fotográfico e fizesse este vídeo sobre o meu encanto com fotografia.

Coinaphoto é uma comunidade de fotógrafos onde você pode fazer upload de fotos e ganhar dinheiro com isso! Eles são pessoas muito amigáveis e acessíveis. Um dia, uma jovem chamada Lilia Bara enviou-me um e-mail perguntando se eu gostaria de fazer parte de um vídeo onde eles apresentam pessoas que adoram a fotografia. Eu era um dos sortudos. Eu comprei um gimbal para ter alguns clipes suaves gravados com a minha GoPro. Filmei em vários locais do centro da cidade de Dublin e em Killiney Hill depois, gravei o áudio e enviei-o para Lilia e ela fez a edição. Eu acho que o resultado final é muito bom!

Desde que esse vídeo foi gravado, meu amor pela fotografia cresceu ainda mais, meus colegas do trabalho ofereceram-me uma das minhas fotos impressas numa moldura e a qualidade me impressionou muito e isso é algo que eu vou começar a fazer no futuro. Além disso, investi mais dinheiro em equipamentos, incluindo uma nova câmera, a Canon 77D que está me deixando muito feliz!

Agora, para 2018, estou a planear novos lugares para fotografar e espero que surjam novos projectos, mas até tudo isso acontecer, ficarei feliz se você assistir, comentar e compartilhar minhas fotos!

If you visited this blog before you probably noticed that I constantly blame the weather if the photos are not great. One of those days I decided to see if I could use the bad weather and poor light to take good photos.
So this day started with a regular visit to the gym with my friends. When I was bringing them home I could see the fog hiding at the top of Dublin mountains so, immediately, I wanted to go there for a blog mission however, it was already afternoon so there was not much more hours of daylight. Decided to drive to Blessington and hope that area of the lake and mountains was envolved in mist. I was dead right!!!
I don't know the area very well and time for exploring it was non existent. I knew this lake resort called Avon Rí because a few years ago I had my first Christmas party in Ireland in there.
Parked there and went to the back of the resort where there is a passage to the lakeshore but of course it was closed by a gate... No hassle, jumped the gate and enjoyed 1h of frozen conditions for photography! To make it more extreme, decided to build that beautiful construction with stones in the cold water to use as foreground. After that hour couldn't cope anymore with my running nose and numb hands and went to the resort's restaurant to have some food and to get warm! If you go there you must try their pizza, it is delicious!
It was time to go back home but tried an alternative route and just by luck found this monument called Threecastles Tower. It was pouring raining but still managed to take a few pictures! That was my adventure through Blessington lands! I hope my "bad weather photography experience" is approved by you! ;)

Se já visitou este blog antes então, talvez tenha percebido que eu culpo constantemente o clima se as fotos não são perfeitas. Um dia decidi ver se eu saberia como usar às más condições atmosféricas e a pouca luz para tirar boas fotos.

Então, esse dia começou com uma visita regular ao ginásio com meus amigos. Quando eu estava a levá-los a casa, dava para ver o nevoeiro escondendo o topo das montanhas de Dublin, então, imediatamente, eu quis ir numa "blog mission" no entanto, já era tarde, por isso já não havia muitas horas de luz pela frente. Decidi ir até Blessington na esperança de que a área do lago e as montanhas estivessem envolvidas em névoa. E estava certo!!!

Não conhecia a área muito bem e o tempo para explorar era muito pouco. Conhecia um resort no lago chamado Avon Rí porque, há alguns anos atrás, eu tive a minha primeira festa de Natal na Irlanda lá.

Estacionei e fui até à parte de trás do resort onde tem uma passagem para o lago mas, é claro que o portão estava fechado... Sem problemas, pulei o portão e desfrutei de 1h de condições gélidas para a fotografia! Para tornar a experiência mais extrema, decidi construir essa bela estrutura com pedras na água fria para usar como primeiro plano.

A determinado momento, não consegui mais lidar com o nariz pingando e as mãos entorpecidas e fui ao restaurante do resort para comer e me aquecer! Se você for lá, tem que provar uma pizza, é deliciosa!

Depois de comer, chegou a hora de voltar para casa mas, tentei uma rota alternativa e, apenas por sorte, encontrei este monumento chamado "Threecastles Tower". Estava chovendo, mas ainda conseguiu tirar algumas fotos!

Essa foi a minha aventura por terras de Blessington! Espero que a minha "experiência na fotografia do tempo ruim" seja aprovada por você! ;)

Shot no.30

So after visiting Newgrange in the morning, I went to Hill of Slane in the afternoon. It's not far from Newgrange so couldn't miss this chance to take photos for another post.

The Hill of Slane became important in 433 AD, when it is believed that St. Patrick lit the first Paschal fire in Ireland in defiance to the King of Tara, the High King Laoire. After that, St. Earc built a monastery, which was rebuilt in it's actual shape in 1512 and a Franciscan friary was founded by Sir Christopher Flemming. It was occupied until the 17th century.

From the top of the hill you have a beutiful view from Co. Meath and on that day, from the top window in the friary's ruins, I could see the sea! There is only ruins but they are quite well preserved. In the Slane Abbey you still have the walls and the bell tower surrounded by a graveyard and in the friary you still have stairs to climb and different divisions to explore.

It is a very small monument but totally worth a visit! The view is beautiful, the place is very quiet and for those that have an interest in history, religion and culture, you can enjoy the mystic experience.

It was a beautiful and cold day and I really enjoyed the time that I spent exploring the place and shooting! Hope you enjoy my photos!

Então, depois de visitar Newgrange pela manhã, fui à Colina de Slane pela tarde. Fica perto de Newgrange por isso não podia perder essa chance de tirar fotos para outro post.

A Colina de Slane tornou-se importante em 433 dC, quando acredita-se que São Patrício acendeu a primeira fogueira Pascal na Irlanda, desafiando o rei de Tara, o Alto Rei Laoire. Depois disso, St. Earc construiu um mosteiro, que foi reconstruído na sua planta actual em 1512 e também, um convento franciscano foi fundado por Sir Christopher Flemming. Foi ocupado até o século XVII.

Do topo da colina, você tem uma óptima visão do Codado de Meath e naquele dia, da janela superior nas ruínas do convento, eu era possível ver o mar! Há apenas ruínas, mas estão bem preservadas. Na Abadia de Slane você ainda tem as paredes e a torre do sino cercada por um cemitério e no convento você ainda tem escadas para escalar e diferentes divisões para explorar.

É um monumento muito pequeno, mas vale a pena visitar! A vista é linda, o lugar é muito silencioso e para aqueles que se interessam pela história, religião e cultura, você pode desfrutar da experiência mística.

Estava um belo dia no entanto muito frio. Apesar disso gostei muito do tempo que passei a explorar o local e a fotografar! Espero que você goste das minhas fotos!

And this day started like many others, without any plan, would just let it go! After looking out the window and saw the blue sky, that changed! I have a little list of places to go to photograph and on that day, would be Newgrange!
Newgrange is a megalithic construction from the Neolitical period, on the south side of river Boyne, dating around 3200 AC which makes it more ancient than Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza, in Egypt. Newgrange is a tomb and is part of an archeological area that includes the tombs of Knowth and Dowth. On this guided visit, I just went to see Newgrange.

If you want to visit Newgrange, there is no point in putting "Newgrange" on your GPS and drive. The entrance is through Brú na Bóinne (Palace of Boyne in Irish) visitor centre, where you have car park and facilities with a centre for interpretation of the Neolithic monuments. Over there you will buy a ticket which will allow you to travel on a shuttle bus to Newgrange and have a guided tour that lasts around 1h and then the shuttle bus will bring you back to the visitor centre.

I was very interested in all that knowledge but the aim of my visit was to take photos. Unfortunatelly, it's not permitted to take photos inside the monument so I only have photos from outside. That 1h time frame is very tight between the guided tour and taking photos so of course I missed the shuttle bus to return to the visitor centre. I was surrounded by fields and farms, such natural beauty! I had two choices, either wait for the next bus and hope they would have space for me or to walk back. I decided to walk back and to take some photos during my 30min walking journey! It was worth it! Took some photos and when I was already on a road with houses, with not much to photograph, a shuttle bus completly empty was driving towards the visitor centre and the famous thumbu up worked! Got a lift after I took all the photos that I wanted, what else could I ask for? :D

E este dia começou como muitos outros, sem qualquer plano, apenas deixar-me levar! Depois de olhar pela janela e ver o céu azul, isso mudou! Eu tenho uma pequena lista de lugares que eu quero fotografar e naquele dia seria Newgrange!
Newgrange é uma construção megalítica do período neolítico, no lado sul do rio Boyne, contruído cerca de 3200 anos antes de Cristo, o que a torna mais antiga do que Stonehenge e as pirâmides de Gizé, no Egito. Newgrange é um túmulo e faz parte de uma área arqueológica que inclui os túmulos de Knowth e Dowth. Nesta visita guiada, só visitei Newgrange.
Se você quiser visitar Newgrange, não vale a pena colocar "Newgrange" no GPS e sair a conduzir. A entrada é através do centro de visitantes "Brú na Bóinne" (Palácio do Boyne em irlandês), onde tem estacionamento e instalações com um centro de interpretação dos monumentos neolíticos. Aí, você pode comprar um bilhete que lhe permitirá viajar num mini autocarro até Newgrange e ter uma visita guiada que dura cerca de 1h e, em seguida, o mini autocarro leva-lo-á de volta ao centro de visitantes.

Eu estava muito interessado em toda a informação disponível, mas o objectivo da minha visita era tirar fotos. Infelizmente, não é permitido tirar fotos dentro do monumento por isso só tenho fotos da parte de fora. Essa 1h disponível é muito apertada para a visita guiada e para poder tirar fotos e é claro que eu perdi o mini autocarro de retorno. Estava cercado por campos e fazendas, uma beleza tão natural! Eu tinha duas escolhas, ou aguardava o próximo autocarro na esperança que houvesse espaço para mim ou voltava a pé. Acabei por decidir caminhar de volta e tirar algumas fotos durante a caminhada de meia hora! Valeu a pena! Tirei as fotos que queria e quando eu já estava numa estrada com casas, sem muito para fotografar, um dos autocarros completamente vazio estava a passar em direcção ao centro de visitantes. O famoso polegar para cima funcionou, apanhei boleia depois de tirar todas as fotos que eu queria, o que mais eu poderia pedir? : D

Shot no.28

Have you ever heard about Trim Castle? Have you ever seen an image of Trim Castle? I would guess yes but, probably you don't know. Braveheart, that movie directed and starring Mel Gibson about a Scottish warrior trying to fight for his people's freedom against the English crown, do you know it? Part of the movie was filmed in Trim Castle.

This castle was built in the 12th Century on the bank of River Boyne by Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath and it is the largest Norman castle in Ireland. Even if, nowadays, there is only ruins left from the castle, inside the walls you still have an idea of how imponent and impressive it would be when ruled by the De Lacy family.

The castle is being managed by the Office of Public Works and there is guided tours inside the main building and they are totally worth it! There is not much to see inside but the information that you get from the tour guide brings your imagination back to the medieval times!

Trim is less than 1h driving from Dublin city centre but if you want to stay in the town , you have the Trim Castle Hotel, a four star hotel just in front the castle. I didn't stay in the hotel, I just went to have something to eat after so many hours shooting and for the food and for the friendly staff, I recommend staying.

It wasn't the perfect day for photography due to the traditional Irish weather but it was a very enjoyable trip!

Já ouviu falar do Castelo de Trim? Já viu alguma imagem do Castelo de Trim? Eu arrisco que sim, mas provavelmente você não sabe. "Braveheart", aquele filme realizado e estrelado por Mel Gibson sobre um guerreiro Escocês que luta pela liberdade do seu povo contra a coroa inglesa, lembra? Parte do filme foi feito no Castelo de Trim.

Este castelo foi construído no século 12 numa das margens do rio Boyne por Hugh de Lacy, Lorde de Meath e é o maior castelo normando da Irlanda. Mesmo que hoje em dia apenas existam ruínas do castelo, dentro das muralhas, você ainda pode ter uma idéia do quão imponente e impressionante seria quando governado pela família De Lacy.

O castelo é gerido pelo Escritório de Obras Públicas e é possível fazer visitas guiadas dentro do edifício principal e vale bem a pena! Não há muito para ver dentro do castelo mas, a informação transmitida pelo guia turístico leva a sua imaginação até aos tempos medievais!

Trim fica a menos de 1h de carro do centro da cidade de Dublin, mas se você quiser ficar na vila, existe o Trim Castle Hotel, um hotel de quatro estrelas mesmo em frente ao castelo. Eu não fiquei no hotel, apenas lá entrei para comer algo depois de tantas horas a fotografar e, pela a comida e pela a equipa tão simpática, eu recomendo para uma estadia.

Não foi o dia perfeito para fotografia devido ao tradicional clima irlandês, mas foi uma viagem muito agradável!

So another sunny day in the Irish autunm! Another day where I planned to do a bunch of nothing but couldn't help to grab my camera after a morning spent in the gym. I had to make a quick decision because normally the Irish sun doesn't last for the whole day. Where to go? Easy, Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park. The Phoenix Park is always my first option when I want to go to take photos but not far from home. It's so big that I still have too many places to photograph there.

After my workout I was very hungry so my first stop was at the Boathouse Restaurant by the lake side. The food is delicious and the view of the lake just makes you want to stay sitting there forever! Of course I was too relaxed and comfortable in there so totally forgot to take a photo to show.

Farmleigh was built by the great-grandson of Arthur Guinness, Edward Cecil Guinness, in 1880's. The property was bought from the Guinness family and currently is managed by the Office of Public Works. The house has guided tours and it's grounds are used for several cultural programs through the whole year. The house is also the official Irish State Guesthouse and has welcomed guests like Queen Elizabeth II, Barack Obama, the former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and most recently the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

I have visited this place several times but still haven't had a chance to do a guided tour. Normally I have something to eat in the Boathouse and then go for a walk in it's parklands like the sunken gardens, the walled garden, the fountain lawn and the clock tower. I always have to go near the clock tower, it has some kind of hypnotic effect on me. Curious fact, I have been working in the same hospital for the last 3 years and from the 3rd floor I can see a beautiful clock tower far in the landscape. I always asked people where that tower was or the name but no one knew. Last year I visited Farmleigh for the first time after 2 years working in that hospital and I accidentaly discovered that it is the clock tower in Farmleigh! Like I used to say, Dublin still surprises me!

Então, outro dia ensolarado no outono irlandês! Outro dia em que planeei fazer um monte de nada no entanto, não pude evitar pegar na minha câmera depois de uma manhã passada no ginásio. Tive que tomar uma decisão rápida porque o sol irlandês raramente dura um dia inteiro. Onde ir? Fácil, Farmleigh no Phoenix Park. O Phoenix Park é sempre a minha primeira opção quando eu quero ir tirar fotos, mas não muito longe de casa. É enorme e ainda há muito que fotografar por lá!
Depois do meu treino, a fome aperta, então a minha primeira paragem foi no restaurante Boathouse, ao lado do lago. A comida é deliciosa e a vista do lago apenas faz você querer ficar sentado lá para sempre! Claro que eu estava tão relaxado e confortável que esqueci de tirar uma foto para mostrar.
Farmleigh foi construído pelo bisneto de Arthur Guinness, Edward Cecil Guinness, em 1880. A propriedade foi comprada à família Guinness e atualmente é administrada pelo Escritório de Obras Públicas. A casa tem visitas guiadas e os seus jardins são utilizados para vários programas culturais durante todo o ano. A casa também é a Official Irish State Guesthouse (casa que recebe personalidades em visitas de estado) e recebeu convidados como a Rainha Elizabeth II, Barack Obama, o ex-secretário-geral das Nações Unidas Ban Ki Moon e, mais recentemente, o primeiro-ministro do Canadá, Justin Trudeau.
Já visitei este lugar tantas vezes e ainda não fiz uma visita guiada. Normalmente, quando visito Farmleigh, como algo no Boathouse e, em seguida, dou um passeio pelo "sunken garden" (jardim afundado), o "walled garden" (jardim limitado por muros altos), o jardim da fonte e a torre do relógio. Eu tenho sempre que ir perto da torre do relógio, parece que tem algum tipo de efeito hipnótico sobre mim. Facto curioso, trabalhei no mesmo hospital nos últimos 3 anos e, a partir do 3º andar, dá para ver uma bela torre do relógio longe na paisagem. Sempre perguntei a pessoas onde ficava essa torre ou o nome, mas ninguém sabia. No ano passado eu visitei Farmleigh pela primeira vez depois de 2 anos trabalhando naquele hospital e descobri que é a torre do relógio em Farmleigh! Como costumo dizer, Dublin ainda me surpreende!

Shot no.26

So it was the last week of October and I had that whole week to do a whole lot of nothing! Of course I decided that I would do my best to find new places to do my shots! First spot was suggested by a friend that lives in Celbridge as she was constantly talking about this place and it would be good for a session for my blog. Ok, challenge accepted!

Went there late afternoon and evening after the rain stopped and the clouds started to get lighter. Weather is always a big issue for my shots but that is only a challenge that helps me to learn even more about photography.

This place is Castletown House, a Palladin palace built in 1773 by William Connoly and stayed in by his family for many generations. Currently the property is being ruled by the Office of Public Works.

Along with it's beauty and it's historical importance, Castletown is a very important social and cultural point of interest, located in Celbridge and it is only 20km away from Dublin City Centre. It is open everyday and people enjoy it's parklands for walks or to have something to eat at the café. Through the year there is multiple cultural activities and exhibitions to attend. The house is also open for guided tours. Do you need any more reasons to visit Castletown House? Ok, so just take a look at my shots and you might find your reason for a visit!

Então, era a última semana de Outubro e tive toda a semana para fazer um monte de nada! Claro, eu decidi que faria o meu melhor para encontrar novos lugares para tirar fotos! O primeiro lugar foi sugerido por uma colega que vive em Celbridge, que estava constantemente a falar sobre esse casarão/palácio e que seria bom para uma sessão para o meu blog. Ok, desafio aceite!
Fui lá ao fim da tarde depois que a chuva parou e as nuvens começaram a ficar mais claras. As condições meteorológicas são sempre um grande problema para fotografar, mas isso é apenas um desafio que me ajuda a aprender ainda mais sobre fotografia.
Este lugar é Castletown House, um palácio paladino construído em 1773 por William Connoly e permaneceu na sua família por muitas gerações. Actualmente, a propriedade está sob a alçada do Escritório de Obras Públicas.
Junto com a beleza e a importância histórica, Castletown é um ponto de interesse social e cultural muito importante, localizado em Celbridge e fica a apenas 20 km do centro da cidade de Dublin. Está aberto todos os dias e as pessoas gostam de ir lá para caminhadas ou de comer algo no café. Ao longo do ano, existem várias actividades culturais e exposições para participar. A casa também está aberta para visitas guiadas. Precisa de mais motivos para visitar Castletown House? Ok, então dê uma olhadela nas minhas fotos e pode ser que encontre o seu motivo para uma visita!
